Slippery Rock University

Watershed: Slippery Rock Creek
Project Location: Slippery Rock, Pennsylvania
Date Of Completion: December2023
Highlights: Dam Restoration, Stream Restoration

Contracted by the State System of Higher Education – Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, ARRC removed six low-head dams and restored approximately 2,500 linear feet of stream at Slippery Rock University.

The excess sediments were spread and dried for reuse in meadow areas around the campus. All remaining sediments were stabilized in place and vegetated to establish the banks and floodplain of the restored stream. Various stream structures, including rock-constructed riffles, log riffles, and boulder toe protection, were installed to foster habitat and encourage the development of new biological communities. The project was planted with over 700 live stakes and 170 native trees and shrubs.
